The Curiosity Box

My first ever window display for the Salvation Army charity shop on Princes Street, just off Regent's Street.

My design explores the idea of the shop being a hidden treasure with many wonderful things to be found inside. The curiosity box, a reverse Pandora's Box, when opened releases this beautiful objects.

The design is hand cut out of vinyl. The shapes and colours also hopefully mirror a Christmas theme, as the display will be up for the festive season.

Some under the sea creations

Some head pieces creations from a recent under the sea themed party...

Friday night with Gary Card

I was lucky enough to attend a talk with Gary Card led by Wallpaper's editor Henrietta Thompson at the fabulous store David David.

Funny and inspiring, the discussions Gary generated has only fuelled my passion and ambition to make it in this industry.

Giffords Circus Revisited...
So I headed back to the Cotswolds to see Giffords Circus's eagerly anticipated production of War and Peace.

My sets and painted backdrops were thankfully all still standing and looked fantastic so I could settle back and enjoy the show...

...and what a show it was..

As the show drew to a close and the stars appeared in the sky above, I couldn't help but look to the future and next year when I can work for Giffords Circus again.

Production photos from a Midsummer Night's Dream

More photos showcasing the set design work behind this outdoor production:

An archway I made out of twisting strips of withy around a tree trunk.
Different sections and panels of withy and material woven together, enclosed a circular area for the actors to perform in.

At night, by fairylight...

I hand-sewed large patchwork panels, then weathered and spray-painted... create canopies for action to take place under.
 The exterior...
...and interior of the church where more action takes place.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

2 July 2011 - 5 August 2011- This summer Iris Theatre present an exciting promenade production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set in the beautiful and intimate gardens of St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden.
Directed by Dan Winder. Set design by Helen Coyston.
I worked with Helen to create intimate, and fairytale like settings for the different outdoor areas where the play is performed.

A few days into the show and it is already recieving fantastic reviews!

The start of the festival season...

I have just spent a week up north in Manchester working onsite for Parklife festival.I was collaborating with the collectives Audiofarm and Mad Ferret on their various creative visuals for the festival.

Some of these included a giant treehouse, from which DJ's could play down to the crowds...

The Secret Garden which included various art installations...

...and different themed pagodas around the whole festival site. I worked on several of these, covering the scaffold frames, painting and decorating them with materials that would withstand the unpredictable weather conditions and violent Manchester rain!

Up in the air!

More Circus Stories
The Work: The Canvas Hangings

Set design model.
In addition to the backdrops we also made sixteen canvas paintings, to hang around the inside perimeter of the big top.

We wanted to keep a sketch-like quality to them, so they look like pages torn from a book.

I embellished the canvases with hand-stitched embroidery and large 3-D objects.
